Sunlight with an ache
prompt from Saltwater and Sage
The goddess sun takes her slender fingers to my trachea and presses hard where its soft
bearing down with the heat of a world in the oven.
deep into September she paces the sky without relent.
her reign has been in the works for years
we have aided in the footwork
No
we are the footwork.
Still, we stand below her, bodies crying great heaves of sweat.
we call her forward, oppress us
demean us under a glowing ember thumb.
Open the door she is waiting inside
dragoness in the passenger with the bag at the ready.
oil blackened teeth, garbage nails sharpened
too late she swoons
too late
and the bag is upon us
plastic eyed
nostrils full of it, to the sinus
down to the bile
