Thea gets a check
Alicia written for surreal Saturdays prompt :)
Talking.
It’s what’s written beside Thea’s check on the board
every time.
She can hear the laughter in the hallway of her peers lining up for recess.
the teacher begins the countdown,
She’s using her stern voice which means if she gets to one, Thea might have a punishment comrade…
Someone to talk to, Thea thinks
with a sly smile.
But no luck
the hall goes church quiet
footsteps single file
go marching out the double doors.
To a tune that’s begun to play in her mind
🎵The ants go marching two by two 🎶
Thea rests her fist firmly against her chin staring out the window she wonders if Noah actually put two of every animal on the ark. what about ants? did he collect two ants? and how did he know if one was a girl and one was a boy… and what about the dinosaurs!
He could have fit the little dinosaurs
or a baby brontosaurus.
Thea was beginning to have mixed feelings about Noah.
she gazed at the smiling face of the Bronto in the Sears parking lot.
He probably needed a tie
a 1,000 ties
all sewn together
he could have made a special order
if he called in advance.
Or maybe!
She was a girl bronto
and she needed a car for all her babies
and she smooshed all the empty cars
in the parking lot so they could be
melded together to make one giant car…
the cars were all empty
don’t leave that fact out
she checked first
craning her giant neck down
into each window.
Somewhere between deciding who would teach the mama bronto to drive
and names for all five of her children
the bell rang and
Thea stared down at the empty worksheet sitting in front of her.
she grabbed for the pencil
but it was too late,
Mrs. Webs shadow loomed across her desk like a dark entity
“THEA I HAVE HAD it….. “

I could read anything you write & enjoy it!
I like how this feels like a descent into the depths of a child’s world - where daydreaming becomes continuity.
