popping wheelies
I’m not going to fall asleep at the wheel
to much same scenery
I’ll put my hand in the passenger seat
close my eyes just for a second
just resting them
feel for your leg
You’re in the rearview
In the windshield
I’m not going to explain
the starburst streetlights jetting past
with their vertical spines
ram rod straight
I’m not going to swerve
at the broken fence
in case of nails.
Or speed up where the road turns sharp into darkness
the angle unknown
wont mind the headlights illuminating the stranger in the parking lot
bull run at the car
keep driving
thumb rolling in the road
keep driving
stay awake
I’m not going to fall asleep.

I like how the repetition of "I'm not going to fall asleep" becomes more than staying awake behind the wheel. By the end, it feels like a promise to stay present, no matter what appears on the road ahead. The ordinary drive slowly turns into something much more emotional, and I thought that shift was handled really well.
A drive in the car becomes a journey of a lifetime . Beautiful, Holly!
